Keeping Up with Assemblymember Cooper – December Issue

Wednesday, December 7, 2016 - 00:00

Dear Friend,

It's that time of year again, a time for friends and family to get together to reflect and to give thanks.

However, this holiday season let us not forget about the less fortunate who may not be able to fully afford to celebrate this time of year.

While our economy is improving and many people are back to work, thousands are still struggling to get by. That's why this year; we hosted our second annual Thanksgiving Healthy Family and Turkey Giveaway. Thousands of people braved chilly temperatures at Luther Burbank High School in South Sacramento to take part in our event and to receive free turkeys, flu shots, health and dental screenings, and haircuts.

I am committed to helping underserved communities and this holiday season I encourage you to take the time to volunteer in your community to help those truly in need. Your generosity can make a difference in the lives of our friends and our neighbors. Check out our photos below:

Out and About in District 9:

Thank you for taking the time to read my monthly update. Don't forget to check out my website. Here, you will find the latest information from both my Capitol Office and District Office on events, legislation, the state budget, and district happenings.

I joined families at Elitha Donner Elementary to encourage students to walk or bike and use safer routes to school as part of national Walk to School Day.

Another great crab feed with Stephanie Nguyen and Elk Grove City Councilman Darren Suen for the books. Thanks again, Asian Resources Inc. for everything you do in our community!

Photos from day one of my two-day Ag tour through the central valley with the Western Agricultural Processors Association. First stop: Harvest Valley Nut Co. This 25-year family owned business produces a variety of certified organic almond products including; butter, flour, and even the nuts inside candy bars! Thanks Janine for the very informative tour!

Second stop: CA Dairies Inc. in Visalia. They produce 800 million pounds of powdered milk and 380 million pounds of butter each year. Two hundred truckloads of milk arrive every day at this facility that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Great tour and the butter tasted amazing!

Day two: Exeter-Ivanhoe citrus packing house. Did you know that China and Japan are some of our biggest consumers of California citrus?

Second stop of day two brings us to the City of Kingsburg in Fresno County for a tour of HMC Farms. Here they grow several varieties of stone fruit and table grapes for export to fruit lovers across the world. Nothing better than a fresh-off-the-vine grape!! Big thanks to Harold for the tour!

The final stop of our two-day Ag tour brings us to Dos Palos Cotton Co-op in Los Banos, California where farmers not only feed, but also clothe the world. Huge thanks to Cannon Michael, a 6th generation farmer who let me drive his cotton harvester across his 16,000 acre farm (yes, CA really has cotton gins!) Did you know each harvester costs $700k and they only drive it 45 days per year?

Big thanks to Principal Jim Peterson and all the staff and volunteers that made the Cash for College workshop a huge success for the students at Luther Burbank High School!

I had a wonderful time as the Keynote speaker at the Wiley W. Manuel Bar Association Legal Fusion Scholarship Gala. Congratulations to Mayor Kevin Johnson and Judge Vance Raye for being named as this year's honorees.

When there is a fire, many people run away, but not our brave firefighters who run into them and save lives. I join hundreds of firefighters from throughout California to honor the memory of 29 individuals whose names will be added to the California Firefighters Memorial for their heroism.

Congratulations to the Pasquil Family Foundation on "Jazz on the Green"! I applaud the family's commitment to the children in District 9 and in the Philippines.

I had a wonderful time at this year's Mexican Cultural Center of Northern California annual Gala!

I had an amazing experience providing pizza to so many excited and enthusiastic kids for the second year-in-a-row during Family Night at John Still Elementary School in South Sacramento.

The state of Lodi is Strong! I had the pleasure of joining my friends from Waste Management at the Lodi State of the City Breakfast.

I had a fantastic evening at Lodi's annual Harvest Social with the Lodi District Grape Growers Association.

Congratulations to longtime Elk Grove residents, Jim & Annaclare Entrican on being named Elk Grove's 2016 Citizens of the Year. I had the honor of presenting them with a legislative resolution to thank them for their many years of service to our community.

Thanks to First 5 of California for inviting me to read on their official reading tour at Martin Luther King Jr. public library! I had the pleasure of reading Good Night, Gorilla to these amazing kids.

Thanks to the staff of Florin High School and their amazing team of volunteers for putting together another great Cash for College workshop for their students!

I had a great meeting with the Slavic American Chamber of Commerce and an international delegation of bilingual educators.

November was Sikh American Awareness Month and I had the pleasure of recognizing community leaders, Harjit Kaur and Goldy Sherill on the Assembly Floor. I have a huge Sikh population in my district and I'm proud to represent them in the state Legislature.

So happy to honor Leon "Lil' Kida" Burns of Elk Grove as the winner of the "So You Think You Can Dance" television competition on the Assembly Floor! Congratulations!

Another amazing Veterans Day Parade in Elk Grove! Thanks to all who have served or currently serving our country, their families, and everyone that joined us in celebrating them on Veterans Day!

Congratulations to longtime ABC 10 Meteorologist, Darla Givens, on her well-deserved retirement. Great work Darla!

Back in June, shortly after planting season, I joined the California Rice Commission for a tour of the rice fields just west of downtown Sacramento. Last month, I did a follow up tour to learn about harvesting and the challenges that CA farmers face each year. We are truly lucky to be surrounded by Ag! I'm here to gain knowledge and inform my constituents about the abundant amount of work and money that it takes to produce these crops and to hold the title as the Farm to Fork Capital.

Lastly, our intern Max from our District Office came to the Capitol for a tour and I had the pleasure of taking him on the Assembly Floor and showed him how to submit a vote on legislation. Max was connected with my office through the Civitas program at Rio Americano High School. Thank you, Max, for all of your hard work in our District Office!
