Cooper, Assembly Hold Special MLK Tribute

Friday, January 15, 2016

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Jim Cooper (D-Elk Grove) and the State Assembly held a special tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the Friday, January 15th, 2016…what would have been the civil rights leader’s 87th birthday. In 1970, California was the first state in the nation to pass legislation making Dr. King’s birthday a school holiday and then a statewide holiday. “January 18, 2016 will mark the 30th celebration of the national holiday for Dr. King,” noted Assemblymember Cooper. “Dr. King’s vision of having a more just and equal society paved the way for the landmark legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.” Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.
